Stories of Hope

Stories of Hope

The young people in the stories below have all been in Home from Home foster care, and we are so proud of their progress.

A Future Educator

Abongile, one of our dedicated interns 2024, used the resources provided to enhance his skills and broaden his horizons.

During this time Abongile became more certain about his passion for teaching and this led him to apply and be accepted to pursue a Bachelor’s degree in Education through UNISA.

Thanks to the support from Home from Home, Abongile has registered for his first year. Although distance learning presents its challenges, Abongile is committed to this journey and prepared for the road ahead.

A Journey Toward Child & Youth Care

Throughout her internship, Sandisiwe received significant guidance and mentorship, which helped her envision her future. Despite not having completed Grade 12, she researched and found an institution where she could further her studies.

She has registered to become a Child and Youth Care Worker. Sandisiwe has grown into a confident and tech-savvy. Her journey at Home from Home has shaped her into a mature and grounded young adult, ready to help others grow.

During her internship, she honed her ability to present the mission of Home from Home, along with her personal journey/story to various supporters and donors—a skill she continues to apply effectively.

From Intern to Home from Home Employee

Mzimasi has been quite proactive within our organisation as a young person who has left foster care. He has been selected as a house leader in our Khayelitsha transition house, and has been doing well, by guiding and educating our young people.

He successfully completed his internship in our Operations Department in 2024, demonstrating such exceptional ability and professionalism that he has been offered a one-year contract to continue contributing to the team. Initially unfamiliar with basic computer functions, Mzimasi has grown immensely with confidence and belief in his self-worth, making him a valuable asset to our organization. He is capable of teaching our new intern recruits to navigate the computer and emails.

He is currently preparing to secure his driver’s license and is actively pursuing the development of additional skills to enhance his future employment opportunities.
