Kevin’s Resilience: From Abandonment to Aspiration

Kevin’s Resilience: From Abandonment to Aspiration

Kevin’s journey with Home from Home began when he was seven years old, after being abandoned by his father at the age of six. Originally from the DRC, Kevin has faced additional challenges due to his foreign national status.

Now 16, Kevin has embraced his role as the eldest child in his foster home, serving as a positive role model for his younger siblings. The determination and commitment he has shown in his academics have been remarkable, especially considering the difficulties he previously faced. We are incredibly proud of his achievements, and his ambition is to pursue higher education.

Kevin’s journey has not been without its hurdles. He has experienced frequent changes in adult support, including social workers, which have impacted his emotional well-being. Despite these challenges, Kevin remains resilient and focused on his goals.

With the help of his biological sister, efforts are underway to obtain a reprint of Kevin’s birth certificate from Congo. This document is crucial for applying for a passport at the DRC Consulate in Pretoria and, subsequently, a student visa. Unfortunately, his sister is currently on maternity leave and unable to provide financial assistance.

We have been working together with Scalabrini, who offers welfare and advocacy services to migrants and refugees, displaced people, seafarers and others affected by human mobility. They have indicated that Kevin does not qualify for an exemption due to having known family in South Africa, necessitating a visa application instead.

At home, he takes on a caregiving role, demonstrating maturity and compassion by looking out for others in the household.

Kevin’s resilience and sense of responsibility are commendable. With continued support, he is well-positioned to overcome obstacles and achieve his aspirations. He is highly regarded at school by both teachers and peers for his discipline and leadership. As part of a discipleship programme and a grade leader, Kevin continues to excel.

In addition to his academic and leadership pursuits, Kevin’s dedication to physical fitness is evident through his regular gym attendance and passion for sports. He plays tennis, soccer, and rugby and has recently taken up basketball, which he hopes to pursue professionally. His talent and dedication in basketball are already evident.
